Busu & The Damask Drum
by Yukio Mishima
July / August 2017

Following Ashita No Kaze, our co-production with Yellow Earth Theatre last year, Busu & The Damask Drum project gives continuation to our international collaboration with artists and theatre companies from Japan and the British East Asian partners in the UK. This pilot project starts with a six-week theatre lab/rehearsals towards development of a new show in partnership with Japanese company Busu Theatre. The project will culminate in 2 scratch shows in Japan and 7 pilot shows in the UK (London, Portsmouth & Isle of Wight venues). Busu is a classic farce and The Damask Drum, a tragic ghost story, both adapted by Yukio Mishima. Busu Theatre and StoneCrabs join forces to create an irreverent, playful take on the traditional Kyogen and Noh plays, presented with a contemporary twist incorporating Japanese folkloric music.

“Thought-provoking and celebratory”

This project is supported by Arts Council of England, Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation, Philip Bates Trust and Japan Arts.
