On 15 June, we celebrated the culmination of the first year of our Associate Artist Training Programme. Held at Art House Life in East Cowes, REFRACTION showcased the work of Ben Homes, Cody Pevreall, and Lucas Berry.

Ben directed ‘The Twin’, a theatre production featuring four young people from our ongoing Off Book National Saturday Club. The evening also exhibited Ben’s photo series, ‘Queer in the Life’, highlighting three queer subjects through photographs taken by Jasmine Metta Truman.
Ben said:
“The evening was an excellent display of the creativity of queer folk, showcasing not just what it means to be queer but what we can achieve when we are given room to be ourselves.”
Props used in some of StoneCrabs’ productions, supported by the trainees, were also on display. Pieces from Wednesday in Nevermore, the final performance of the ongoing Off Book drama group for young people, were shown alongside a mask used in Ferguson’s Gang in Newtown, part of the Faces + Places immersive promenade performances about LGBTQ+ historical figures associated with the Isle of Wight.

Lucas said:
“It was an honour to collaborate on this celebratory event as a graduate of StoneCrabs’ Associate Artist and Producer Training Programme.
It has given me lifelong skills to apply to my own multi-disciplinary journey and how to navigate other artistic ventures in the future.
I hope to keep making a positive impact in the island’s LGBTQIA+ community and creative industry.”
The exhibition also featured work from local artists Marcie Ellis, Dee Young, and Kieron Vine.

About the AAPTP
The Associate Artist/Producer Training Programme (AAPTP) is an exciting opportunity for Isle of Wight LGBTQ+ young leaders.
Our trainees help deliver LGBTQ+ community projects, as well as building their skills across artistic, producing, and administration. The traineeship is shaped by the trainees themselves, and no two traineeships are the same.
