CASTING CALL FOR

The Woman Who Tamed Lighting

One person show

StoneCrabs Theatre is looking for a playful, physically confident and versatile performer for our new one-person show, The Woman Who Tamed Lightning.

This is a multi-role solo performance, with one actor bringing a cast of female characters to life. The story is seen largely through the eyes of fourteen-year-old Irène Curie, but the performer moves between children, teenagers and adults of different ages, including Hertha Ayrton.

We are looking for an actor with strong character and storytelling instincts who enjoys transformation and can shift confidently between different ages, voices, physicalities and emotional registers. The piece is playful, energetic and visually driven, with moments of humour, physical performance and intimacy alongside a substantial amount of text.

This is not a period piece. The show revisits a historical moment through a contemporary theatrical lens. We’re not looking for impersonations of Marie Curie, Hertha Ayrton or Irène Curie, but for a performer who can playfully and truthfully bring these women to life for audiences today.

Actors of any ethnicity and age are welcome to apply. We are not looking for an actor who necessarily looks fourteen, but for a performer who can convincingly inhabit characters ranging from children and teenagers to older adults.

The characters portrayed are predominantly female. We welcome applications from all performers who are comfortable playing a range of female characters.

The production runs at approximately 50 minutes, so the role requires excellent line-learning skills and the stamina and focus to sustain a solo performance.
