StoneCrabs, as a charity, is entering a new chapter in grassroots theatre, bringing unheard voices and untold stories to the professional stage, whilst at the same time developing young people and their passion for the performing arts, and creating real career opportunities and training for the next generation of theatre makers.

Role: Chair (Volunteer), reasonable travel expenses paid.
Location: Remote (Quarterly online board meetings, plus occasional other group meetings; in-person events/working groups on the Isle of Wight or London, and stakeholder relations).
Time Commitment: ~1 day per month
Tenure is initially for 3 years (up to a maximum 2 terms of 3 years).
After a successful three-year term, our current chair is retiring but is prepared to stay on the Board as a trustee to help the new Chair bed in.

We are looking for a Chair of Trustees who brings professional experience in managing operations in the charity or the creative or heritage sector to help guide our next chapter.
About the role
The Chair is responsible for the leadership of the Board and, together with the Board and the Directors/ Joint CEOs, provides high level strategic direction to StoneCrabs to ensure delivery of its key strategic objectives.
Strategic Leadership
● Lead and energise the Board and ensure effective conduct of business in line
with StoneCrabs Articles of Association.
● Provide leadership to the Board and organisation ensuring a clear vision,
mission and strategic direction are established and pursued and StoneCrabs
values are adhered to.
● Work effectively with the two joint Chief Executives as a “critical friend,”
providing appropriate challenge and support while respecting the boundary
between governance and operational management.
Governance
● Maintain high standards of governance in line with charity law, maintaining
trust and confidence amongst Board members, staff, funders, stakeholders
and participants.
● Support the work of any Subcommittees, liaising with Committee Chairs as
appropriate and attending committees as required.
● Regularly review the performance of the Board and the Joint Chief Executives
and identify and manage the process for renewal of the Board through
recruitment processes.
● Ensure risks are effectively managed and mitigated.
● Act with integrity, avoiding conflicts of interest and safeguarding charity funds and assets.
Reputation and Stakeholders
● Maintain and develop strong relationships with key funders and partners,
● Champion and promote the work of StoneCrabs through their networks.
● Represent StoneCrabs at external and internal events to grow and sustain the
charity profile.
● Ensure the voice of staff and participants are central to strategic decision
making.
What we’re looking for
● An experienced director with executive or non-executive/ trustee board
experience.
● Experience in managing a theatre company, charity or community centred
operations, young people’s development and training, or other involvement in
management in the heritage or creative sector.
● A belief that theatre should be accessible, relevant, and made with
communities.

Time Commitment
The expected time commitment amounts to approx. 1 day per month and the Chair would be expected to undertake the following each year:
● 4 x Trustee Board meetings held per annum commencing 6.00pm for
approximately 2 hours duration plus preparatory reading in advance.
Meetings are held online with one in person meeting per annum on the Isle of
Wight.
● 1 or 2 half day Board strategic planning meetings p.a.
● 1 x Annual General Meeting.
● Annual appraisals with Trustees and CEOs.
● Regular support & supervision meetings with the two directors/ joint CEOs.
● Occasional training as required e.g. Equalities & Diversity; Charity Governance; Safeguarding.
● Attendance at Subcommittee meetings if required.
● Engagement with our performances, the annual trainee showcase and other
events throughout the year (most on Isle of Wight, some in London).
● Fulfilling an ambassadorial role while meeting new contacts and networks.
