Why did you want to become a director?

I’m a mediocre actor and a control freak – go figure.

What’s the best piece of theatre you’ve seen recently?
Belvoir’s production of The Wild Duck as part of the Barbican’s Ibsen season. It was an astonishingly contemporary take on the piece and totally thrilling in its bare-boned nature.

How do you start with a text?

Reading it.

What’s your favourite dinosaur?

Fred – the dinosaur on a jumper named by someone who’s particularly special to me.

Do any of the characters in the play remind you of someone you know?

All of them, some in a more literal sense than others. I think a good playwright responds to the world around them and creates relatable characters; so all well drawn characters remind me of someone I know.

What’s your favourite colour?

I’m going to cheat – White, ‘endless possibilities’.

Favourite thing about home?

Being away.

Tea or coffee?

Tea, all the way.
